Who We Are

SSPP is non-profit, microfinance organization helping Ugandan women start businesses & improve their lives. Amazing, we know.

SSPP is a US- based public charity (501c3) operating in the Acholi Quarters of Kampala, Uganda. Using a unique microfinance model, we extend zero-interest loans and help empower individuals to improve the quality of their lives, the lives of their families, and ultimately their communities. We create strategic partnerships and provide innovative solutions to enable:

  1. employment opportunities,
  2. lending opportunities, and
  3. community development projects.

Through these actions, we seek to centralize relief efforts. We believe that if organizations worked more closely in the same area, each would reap benefits that another offers, increase the amount of hope in an area, and increase the chances for sustainable change.

History

SSPP began operating in 2006 after its founder, Nicholas Easley, returned from the Kampala region of Uganda. The first paper beads were sold that summer and the first zero-interest loan granted shortly thereafter. In August 2007, the IRS formally recognized SSPP as a tax-deductible public charity with 501c3 status.  Although SSPP has experimented with different methods of economic development since its inception, the efforts and vision have remained unchanged.

How We Extend the Loans

To be eligible for a zero-interest loan, the entrepreneurial women participating in SSPP create beaded jewelry out of recycled paper. Paper is shipped by SSPP and transformed into bracelets, necklaces, and handbags. The products are sold in the United States by our partners, and profits returned to the women in the form of salaries and loans.  Loans are handed out in the form of material goods (i.e. vegetables, water tanks, ___) and used by the women to set up local businesses. Once the value of the loan is repaid, the woman leaves the program and another one takes her place as the recipient. To learn more about our model, hop over to the microfinance model page.
